In Brief

Lanzini ruled out recently. Romero is out as well. Mammana and Benedetto are long-term absentees.

Looking Back

Played just a single pre-World Cup friendly and it was more of a training exercise, beating minnows Haiti 4:0. Suffered an ignominious 6:1 battering at the hands of Spain in March in their last more meaningful friendly, in a game which saw their defensive vulnerability badly exposed.

Looking Ahead

Will be desperate to make a strong start in the World Cup when facing a tricky and dangerous side like Iceland, who have great team spirit and will be doubtless eager to surprise them. The Blue and Whites are in possibly the trickiest group in the whole competition and know that the pressure will skyrocket if they fail to get the points against the Scandinavian opponents in Moscow.

Jorge Sampaoli suffered a serious blow in the week before the start of the World Cup as Manuel Lanzini suffered a serious knee injury that ruled him out. The West Ham man was slated to be among the starters but now his place is likely to be taken by Maximiano Meza. Sampaoli is expected to start with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Eduardon Salvio used as a full-back in one of the more interesting caveats.

The likes of Dario Benedetto and Emmanuel Mammana are both long-term absentees. Sergio Romero is also ruled out due to a knee injury and this means that veteran Willy Caballero is expected to be the regular on goal during the World Cup, even if Franco Armani is also a strong contender.

In Brief

Iceland have been surpassing all expectations over the last three years and have nothing to lose going into the World Cup. Have struggled in recent friendlies. Skipper Aron Gunnarsson is a major doubt.

Looking Back

Iceland are the smallest nation by population ever to clinch a World Cup squad and the pressure is off for them going into the upcoming competition in Russia.

Heimir Hallgrimsson's men qualified by winning a qualifying group including the likes of Turkey, Ukraine and Croatia, the last of who they will face again in this World Cup.

However, their form in 2018 has been worrying. They have lost three of the five friendlies they have played this year, winning only one, while their latest two games saw them draw with Ghana and lose to Norway.

Looking Ahead

There were concerns regarding whether the side's main star Gylfi Sigurdsson would be fit for the World Cup. However, the Everton man has resumed full training a fortnight ago, came on as a substitute against Norway and started the game against Ghana. He will be available.

The news are not as good regarding Aron Gunnarsson, who picked up an injury while playing for Cardiff in May. He is in the squad, but has not featured in any of the pre-World Cup friendlies and is a major doubt.

Points of Interest

Iceland's first-ever major competition was the previous European Championship, where they made the quarter-finals. This will be their first-ever World Cup.
