In Brief

Blaszczykowski passed fit and Gilk is expected to return.

Looking Back

Endured a really disappointing start of the World Cup as Senegal got the better of them for a 2:1 win in Moscow. The Poles were slack, their game was riddled with mistakes and they conceded poor goals to suffer a deserved loss. A late rally notwithstanding, they offered very little of actual note and now find themselves with a tough task in their bid to get to the next stage.

Looking Ahead

Will be looking to bring up their level considerably for the extremely tough test of facing Colombia on Sunday. A loss on the day will pretty much end their campaign prematurely and there is no real margin for error for Adam Nawalka and his side.

The coach may well decide to switch formation and use three at the back for the game on Sunday as he looks for a reaction from his team, who clearly looked dysfunctional in the opener. Veteran Jakub Blaszczykowski, who departed with a knock at the end of the first half against Senegal, has shrugged off the issue and is fit to play. Kamil Gilk remains a doubt but is progressing well and has a chance to play after his shoulder injury. Rafael Wolski remains a long-term absentee.

There will be a switch to a three-man defence and some wholesale changes in the starting 11 for the clash.

In Brief

Suffered major setback in the opener after early red card affected their display. Must-win game now. C. M. Sanchez suspended. The main left-back F. Fabra sidelined. J. Rodriguez and W. Barrios set to start.

Looking Back

Colombia were stunned by Japan at the start of the World Cup after their experienced holding midfielder Carlos Sanchez conceded a penalty inside three minutes and as a result also saw a straight red card. Despite fighting back to 1:1 in an impressive first half Los Cafeteros ran out of steam after the break and eventually lost the game 1:2.

James Rodriguez and Barrios came only off the bench in this first game after battling minor muscle issues prior to the game. Both of them failed to provide positive impact on the match. World Cup debutant Falcao looked very hungry though and he was Colombia’s best forward outlet.

Looking Ahead

Coach Pekerman knows that only wins in the remaining matches will guarantee his team’s place in the knockouts and in search of three points now he almost certainly will use James and Barrios from the off. The latter will replace the suspended Sanchez.

Mojica made his competitive debut for Colombia at left-back against Japan and he will be used from the off again as the main player in this positon Fabra sustained serious injury just before the start of the tournament and will be absent for months.

Points of Interest

The only official match against an European side for Colombia in 21st century was at the start of the 2014 World Cup when Greece were trashed 3:0.
