In Brief

Iran lost 1-0 to Spain despite positive performance. Only a win over Portugal will give them qualification to the last 16. Cheshmi seems to be on the way back. Hajsafi also a slight doubt.

Looking Back

Facing Spain, Iran adopted an even more cautious attitude than the one used against Morocco, almost playing in a 6-3-1 formation. Not too surprisingly, they managed to limit the opponents' assaults, closing the first half risking much. Having unluckily gone one goal down after the break, they gave la Roja some hard times, scoring a goal disallowed due to off-side and coming close to equalising at the very end.

Both Arimi and Taremi offered a great performance. The former, in particular, was precious at the back and also managed to lead most of the attacks. Beinravand was also good but luck was not on his side on Diego Costa's goal.

Looking Ahead

Having lost to Spain, Iran have fallen to the third standing of the Group B. As they are 1 point below Portugal, the team they will meet next, they will need a win in order to make it to the last 16.

Cheshmi seems to have overcome a muscular problem picked up while training and resumed regular training. Hajsafi has also shrugged off a minor problem but he could end up sitting on the bench with Mohammadi set to replace him at left-back.

Amiri, Ebrahimi, Shojaei, Jahanbakhsh and Ansarifard are all one yellow card away from ban.

Points of Interest

Iran have never scored to Portugal in the previous two games played.

Portugal

In Brief

Obtained a 1-0 win over Morocco despite poor performance. Ronaldo keeps scoring. A must-not-lose against Iran ahead of them. Moutinho shook off illness. Guerreiro with the group.

Looking Back

An early goal by Ronaldo gave Portugal the chance to set the match against Morocco immediately on the right direction. However, they failed to kill the game off and, after creating a couple of dangerous initiatives still in the first half, with the passing of time they were put under heavy pressure by their opponents. They seriously risked defensively but, in the end, they managed to avoid conceding.

Portugal are clearly Ronaldo-dependent. CR7 scored once again, created another dangerous opportunity and served a fantastic assist for Guedes, who wasted poorly: all offensive initiatives pass through him. Rui Patricio made some precious saves and Cedric was also solid at the back. Guedes and Bernardo Silva, who made several mistakes and lost some dangerous balls, have been quite poor so far.

Looking Ahead

Portugal are now second in the Group B, behind Spain, due to the yellow cards picked up. In order to achieve the knockout stage of the competition, they will have to avoid a defeat against Iran, who are just 1 point off them.

Moutinho has shaken off a 'flu. Guerreiro resumed regular training after shaking off muscular problems.

Bruno Fernandes and Adrien Silva are one yellow card away from ban.

Considering the negative performances offered by Guedes, André Silva could end up being given a starting place as Ronaldo's partner up-front.

Points of Interest

Portugal have already met Iran twice. In a 1972 friendly, they obtained a 3-0 win. In the 2006 World Cup, they beat the Asiatic side 2-0 in the Group stage.
