In Brief

Hard-fought draw against Denmark on Thursday. Australia will have to beat Peru to keep their hopes alive. Nabbout picked up a shoulder injury. Van Marwijk will have to make a change as a result.

Looking Back

Australia conceded an early goal against Denmark on Thursday, but The Socceroos battled their way back into the game when team captain Mile Jedinak slotted home from the spot. Bert van Marwijk's men played well after the break, but that wasn't enough to seal the three points: 1-1.

Australia only claimed one point thus far, but their dream of reaching the last 16 remains alive as a win over Peru in their last game could see them grab the second spot. However, it will be a tough mission as Australia will have to win, while Denmark will have to record a defeat against France. The goal difference could become a key factor as well.

Looking Ahead

Coach Van Marwijk isn't expected to make surprising changes for this last group match against Peru, but he will have to tune his attack for this one as Andrew Nabbout won't be able to start up front. A shoulder injury prevented him from playing the full 90 minutes on Thursday as well.

Van Marwijk will have to make a tough decision with that in mind as players like Tomi Juric, Jamie Maclaren and Daniel Arzani, the youngest player at the World Cup, are all suited for the spot in attack. Juric, who replaced Nabbout in the second half, could get the nod, but Arzani seems like a decent option as well.

Australia will have to push for the win against Peru, but Van Marwijk isn't expected to start with an attacking system. He's set to start with a 4-4-1-1 formation again.

Points of Interest

Australia only managed to keep three clean sheets in their last ten matches.

In Brief

Peru out of the World Cup after two narrow defeats. Tapia is a doubt due to a head knock. Farfan a fresh issue and out with Rodriguez.

Looking Back

Peru are out of the World Cup after suffering a 1-0 loss to France on Thursday. They played a decent game but were ultimately outmatched by opponents who were stronger than them, conceding shortly before the break. Although they improved in the second half, they were unable to score.

The South Americans suffered similar issues in their opening match of the competition against Denmark. They dominated that encounter but came up short when it came to finding the target. They have now failed to score in all of their last three matches.

Peru had been 15 unbeaten coming into the competition.

Looking Ahead

Paolo Guerrero was back in the side after being left on the bench for the opening game. Peru’s star man got into some good positions but was lacking when it came to providing the finishing touch.

Key midfielder Ricardo Tapia failed to make the previous match because of concussion. He is still doubtful for this encounter and is unlikely to be risked if there are any doubts over his condition. He did, however, train on Saturday, suggesting he will be fine.

Jefferson Farfan took a nasty head blow on Saturday and will not play. Rodriguez is also missing due to injury.

Andrea Carrillo shook off a knock to play against France, while the decision to replace Rodriguez and Yotun at the break was apparently tactical.

Points of Interest

The last time Peru lost back to back matches was in October 2015, at the beginning of the qualifying period for the World Cup. Colombia and Chile beat them in those fixtures, which were 31 games ago.
