In Brief

Simon is out while Mikel is an injury concern.

Looking Back

Lit up their World Cup campaign with a 2:0 win over Iceland on Friday that suddenly puts them in a pretty decent position to progress into the last-16. The Eagles stayed calm and assured in what was a tight and tough game against their Scandinavian opponents and eventually the speed and cutting edge of Ahmed Musa made the difference as his brace in the second half ensured the win.

Looking Ahead

Now face Argentina in what will be a mouth-watering face-off for a place in the knockout stages. As much as the Argentinians certainly hold the upper hand in terms of quality, Nigeria have shown much more spirit and togetherness in their second game compared to what looks like a stricken and stunned Albiceleste outfit right now.

Gernot Rohr switched back to three at the back to a good effect in the Iceland game and Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho combined well as a pair. There is no real reason to move away from this system now, even if Argentina will be pretty unpredictable in their own setup. Skipper Jon Obi Mikel suffered a wrist injury in the last game and he is now considered a doubt, even if he should be cleared to play. Otherwise, only Moses Simon is a definite absentee.

Points of Interest

The two teams have met an amazing three times in the last four World Cups, with Nigeria losing twice 1:0 and also 3:2 in Brazil four years ago. Yet the Eagles won 4:2 in a friendly played merely nine months ago.

In Brief

On the brink of elimination and badly need a win. No fresh injury worries.

Looking Back

Suffered an ignominious 3:0 loss at the hands of Croatia last Thursday and already look on the brink of dismal World Cup exit. The team looked overall solid in the first half but the wheels well and truly came off in the second as a disastrous mistake from Willy Caballero allowed the Croatians to take the lead.

Argentina panicked and never really threatened after conceding that goal and two more goals conceded in the final ten minutes sent Jorge Sampaoli's men packing. They have a mere one point from the first two games but in any case still have a chance of qualifying.

Looking Ahead

Need to recover quickly and keep their heads straight for the final group game against Nigeria, which is basically do or die. A win could provide salvation and earn a place in the last-16 but anything less than that means early exit.

It remains to be seen what will be the reaction of the squad after the disaster in the last game and the body language of Lionel Messi was especially concerning, while manager Sampaoli seemed to be unravelling as well.

The suggestions coming up fro the camp are that there will be a return to four at the back. The introduction of Ever Banega looks like a logical move and Angel di Maria is primed for a recall as well. Keeper Caballero is also set to be dropped after the shocker he had and Franco Armani is set to get his first cap.

There are no fresh injury concerns for the manager. Manuel Lanzini, Sergio Romero, Emmanuel Mammana and Dario Bennedetto are all sidelined.
