Colombia

In Brief

Topped their group without properly impressing. That said yet to concede a goal when having XI men on the pitch. The main left-back F. Fabra sidelined. A. Aguilar and talisman J. Rodriguez doubtful, but the latter likely to be involved. L. Muriel shrugged off a problem, but M. Borja carries minor knock.

Looking Back

Colombia did what they had to do on Thursday when edging Senegal 1:0 to win their group. For the second game in a row the young centre-back Mina scored from a set piece to bring the crucial three points, but Los Cafeteros were not hugely impressive and for long periods in this match they struggled to control the play.

Back-to-back clean sheets that also brought vital wins should increase the confidence of the team. Colombia are actually the only team apart from Uruguay yet to concede a goal in this World Cup when having XI players on the pitch, both goals Japan scored against them were after Sanchez’s early sending off.

Looking Ahead

Coach Pekerman saw his main star and team leader James Rodriguez limping off the pitch very early in the last match and the gaffer is not hugely optimistic about Rodriguez’s chances to start in this one. That said the Bayern midfielder is so important that he is very likely to be introduced off the bench at some point.

Fabra is a long-term absentee, while Aguilar got injured against Poland and he is very likely to be absent too.

Quintero is having the tournament of his life with a goal and two assists already. Barrios and Sanchez are the most effective pair of holding midfielders in this tournament in terms of successful tackles and interceptions made.

Muriel picked up a knock in the last group match, but he recovered quickly. Borja also carries a minor injury, but he is yet to be involved in this World Cup anyway.

Points of Interest

Unbeaten by a European team since 2011 – current run is 6 wins and 2 draws. This run included 1:0 win over Belgium, 3:2 success vs. France and the draws were against Spain and Germany.

England

In Brief

A 1-0 defeat to Belgium presented them with Colombia in the last 16. Most bench players used against Red Devils. No major injury concerns and Alli is back.

Looking Back

England opted for a wide rotation in occasion of the last fixture in the Group G, against Belgium. Even though they had some chances for giving the Red Devils a hard time, they were put under heavy oressure and risked a lot defensively. Having gone one goal down early on in the second half, they played a whole lot worse but wasted a major opportunity for equalising. They came close to conceding again towards the very end.

Stones offered another positive performance at the back, such as veteran Cahill. Alexander-Arnold also played well but could have done better on set pieces. Once a starter, Rashford incredibly missed a goal. Rose holds some responsibility for Belgium goal.

Looking Ahead

Having finished on the second place in the Group G, England will next be facing Colombia in the last 16.

Alli seems to have fully recovered from a muscular injury, and there seem to be no other major concerns. The midfielder, who should not be able to play the full 90 minutes, is contending with Loftus-Cheek for a place in the middle of the park.

Walker and Loftus-Cheek are one yellow card away from ban.

Loftus-Cheek did some personal recovery but is not considered a doubt. Delph flew to, and returned from, England due to the birth of his child.

Rose could be considered as an alternative to Young on the left flank of the midfield.

Southgate is considering a switch of goalies in case England had to face the penalty shootout as Pope was impressive during the training.

Points of Interest

England have already met Colombia 5 times: they won 3 and drew twice, without ever losing. In the 1998 World Cup, in occasion of their sole official meeting, they triumphed 2-0.
