In Brief

Benfica coming from two wins in the Liga and in the national cup, now they are awaited by a much more complicated clash, in CL against Bayern. Jonas, Ferreyra, Corchia and Krovinovic out. Ebuehi not eligible. Fejsa available.

Looking Back

In the last league game Benfica easily trashed newly promoted Nacional 0-4. As expected it was a one way match, too much was the difference in quality and experience between the two sides. The men of Rui Vitoria scored 2 goals per half never suffering in defense.

After 4 rounds the eagles sit on top of the table with 10 points, having won 3 and drawn 1 (the 1-1 in the derby with Sporting).

The Primeira Liga was inactive for two weeks, the first because of the international break, the second for the Allianz Cup. As for the national cup, in the first game of the group stage, Benfica defeated Rio Ave 2-1.

Looking Ahead

In the first match of the Champions League's group stage Benfica host German champions Bayern Munich, immediately the strongest opponent...needless to say it will be a very difficult game. The Aguias have qualified to the main draw after eliminating Fenerbahçe in the third round of the qualifiers and Paok in the final.

Defenders Tyronne Ebuehi is dealing with serious knee injury and ruled out. Moreover he was not included in the official European list. Sebastien Corchia is training apart and should miss this game. Midfielder Filip Krovinovic is recovering from a knee injury but will be available only in October.

Striker Facundo Ferreyra is only training in the gym, that means is ruled out.

Serbian midfielder Ljubomir Fejsa, who sustained a thigh muscle injury in the last league game, is now available while forward Jonas Goncalves didn't recover.

Rui Vitoria didn't call-up Varela, Samaris and Lema.

Points of Interest

Benfica so far played 6 times in CL against Bayern...they never won, 3 defeats in Germany and 3 draws in Lisbon (at least they never lost at the Da Luz!). They also met twice in Europa League...two wins for the Germans. Overall Benfica scored 6 goals and conceded 19.

Bayern Munchen

In Brief

Maintained perfect start with another win over Bayer Leverkusen. Kingsley Coman expected to miss out once again. Rafinha and Corentin Tolisso long term absentees. Thiago a slight doubt. Franck Ribery and Leon Goretzka in the squad. Mats Hummels back in full training.

Looking Back

Extended their perfect start to the season with five straight victories as they secured a fairly comfortable 3-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen thanks to goals from Corentin Tolisso, Arjen Robben and James Rodriguez.

Unbeaten in their last five games on the road in Europe, winning four times in the process and scoring at least two goals in each game though failing to keep a cleansheet.

Looking Ahead

The win over Leverkusen came at a price for Bayern with Tolisso and Rafinha both suffering major injuries that rules the duo out for at least a few months.

Coman is also a long term injury concern for Bayern and while Ribery and Goretzka had missed the Leverkusen game due to knocks, the duo are part of the 21-man squad that has traveled to Benfica along with Hummels who has recovered from an Achilles tendon injury

Thiago though is a slight doubt with the midfielder missing the final training session due to a toe injury.

Points of Interest

Bayern's most recent visit to Benfica came in 2016 when a 2-2 draw helped them book a place in the semifinals of the competition while the overall record for the German giants reads one win and three draws on four previous visits
