Young Boys Bern

Last updated: Thu 20 September 2018 08:39
In Brief

Young Boys needed a last-minute goal to claim an extra-time Swiss Cup win over Schaffhausen. Set to kick off their first Champions League group stage campaign against Manchester United. Kevin Mbabu, Gregory Wuthrich and Sandro Lauper are all available. Virtually at full strength.

Looking Back

Young Boys had a surprisingly hard time in their Swiss Cup game against minnows Schaffhausen. They only managed to knock the second division side after scoring in the last minute of extra-time.

The Berners, who are defending Swiss champions, are already the runaway leaders in their domestic championship.

Young Boys are playing in the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in their history. They beat Croatian champions Dianmo Zagreb in the final qualifying round.

Looking Ahead

Sandro Lauper is available again after a month on the sidelines.

Gregory Wuthrich and Kevin Mbabu have missed the Schaffhausen game but have recovered from their respective injuries and will be available.

The returns of Lauper, Wuthrich and Mbabu leave Pedro Texeira and Jordan Lotomba as the sole absentees. The two men would have almost certainly not featured even if available.

Points of Interest

Young Boys have lost four and only one of the six European games they have played against English clubs. Their sole win came in 2010, when they defeated Tottenhem with a 3:2 scoreline in a Champions League qualifying game.

Manchester United

In Brief

Mixed start to the season. Knowing that maximum is needed vs. Young Boys in order to make it out of the group. Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera missing. Antonio Valencia rested. Sergio Romero fitness doubt. Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford available.

Looking Back

United have been far from impressive in their displays so far this season with the Red Devils very fortunate to edge Watford 2:1 away from home on Saturday after being outplayed in the second half.

Three wins mixed with two defeats in the first five rounds in the Premier League and just one clean sheet in these games show that once again United are not one of the top European teams and even making it out of this group will be seen as a success for the Red Devils this season.

Looking Ahead

Coach Mourinho is very likely to trust both Matic and Rashford from the off as they are both about to serve domestic bans, with Fred, Mata and Bailly three other players hoping to get starts on Wednesday after being overlooked domestically in the last few rounds.

Romero and Dalot played the full 90 minutes for the reserves last weekend, which pretty much means that they are fit again, but the lack of match practice leaves Romero a slight doubt. Shaw passed a late fitness test after suffering concussion while on international duty and Mourinho even confirmed that he will start on Wednesday.

Jones, Rojo and Herrera remain unavailable. Due to the artificial pitch Valencia will be rested as he had picked up injuries on such a surface before.

Points of Interest

Very patchy away form in the Champions League in recent years – 3 wins, 2 draws and 5 defeats from their last 10 away Champions League games.
