In Brief

Heavy 2-0 defeat at home against SPAL. A must-win at home against CSKA Moscow. Bianda and Tamuzo ineligible. Perotti and Karsdorp should miss out. De Rossi, Kolarov and Schick all return. Pastore also absent

Looking Back

At home against SPAL Roma played one of the poorest games of their season as they never managed to impose their play and were not particularly dangerous during the first half. Having gone one goal down at the end of the first half, thanks to a penalty kick, they conceded also after the break. Coach Di Francesco tried some tactical changes but things did not get better. Not even once they went one man up. And they actually risked conceding more.

Olsen managed to limit the damages for the Wolves, courtesy of at least 3 decisive saves. Lorenzo Pellegrini was the last one to surrender and he even hit the bar. Dzeko was unrecognizable as he hardly moved and made too many mistakes. Fazio lost too many balls and holds some responsibilities for the visitors' second goal. Cristante seemed to have serious troubles acting as a holding midfielder.

Looking Ahead

Roma saw the end of a 4-game winning run and they lost some further ground from the top of the Serie A.

Roma are sitting on the third place in the Group G as they heavily lost to Real Madrid on the road and won easily against Viktoria Plzen. A success over CSKA Moscow would be fundamental for their European ambitions.

Fuzato and Bianda are ineligible.

Perotti and Karsdorp will still be unavailable. Pastore will also miss out due to a muscular problem. De Rossi, Kolarov and Schick all sat the last game out due to injuries but they recovered in time to make the 21-man squad.

Santon could represent an alternative to Kolarov at left-back and Cristante to De Rossi in the middle of the park. Kluivert is contending with El Shaarawy for a place on the wing.

Points of Interest

Roma hosted CSKA Moscow twice so far: they lost 1-0 in a Cup Winners' Cup in October 1991 and won 5-1 in a Champions League fixture in September 2014.

CSKA Moscow

In Brief

Akinfeev is banned. Bijol should be available. Hernandez, Schennikov, Kuchaev, Vasin and Bistrovic are all sidelined.

Looking Back

Played a solid game away at Anzhi in the league on Friday and got the job done for a 2:0 success, having had good control of the game. Nikola Vlasic got the opener after half an hour and the team barely attacked after that until they scored a second 20 minutes before the end.

Gave themselves a real shot at a top-three finish in the group after holding off Real Madrid for a famous 1:0 home win in the previous match day. A very early goal by Vlasic was enough to get the points for the Army Men and they now have already four points from two games, and can even dream of getting into the last-16 of the Champions League.

Looking Ahead

Heading to Italy for a big game against what is a talented but also vulnerable Roma side. CSKA will look to utilise their speed on the counter and aim to frustrate Roma in what is definitely a game they could win, having triumphed at tough places like Benfica, Basel and Lyon in the last year or so.

Jaka Bijol should be over a knock in time to face the Italians, having missed the Friday game, but Abel Hernandez is not yet fit for the clash. Viktor Vasin and Konstantin Kuchaev are still recovering from serious injuries while Kristian Bistrovic and Georgi Schennikov are missing due to injuries as well.

Keeper Igor Akinfeev was sent off right at the of the game against Real Madrid for swearing at the referee and the veteran keeper is now banned for the upcoming game. It remains to be seen whether Georgi Krynats or Ilya Pomazun will replace him on goal but in either case, it will be a massive loss for a team short of experience.

Points of Interest

CSKA played against Roma in the Champions League back in 2014 and suffered a heavy 5:1 loss at the Olimpico.
