Game Report

Highlights

Cameron Dawson made a brilliant penalty save as Sheffield Wednesday produced a rearguard defensive display to thwart Sheffield United in the Steel City derby. The Wednesday keeper kept out David McGoldrick as his side ended a run of four straight defeats. It ensured their bitter rivals failed to go back to the top of the Championship although they do sit in 2nd.

Detail

United had Mark Duffy back while Chris Basham returned following suspension. Wednesday made changes with Jordan Thorniley, Ash Baker, Matt Penney and Morgan Fox all starting.

United were the better side for the entire match and were only denied victory by a strong showing by Wednesday's defence and in particular Dawson in goal. The visitors only had one shot on goal in the entire match with sub Marco Matias tamely shooting at Dean Henderson late on.

Dawson was in inspired form as he kept out John Fleck's long ranger before making a wonderful penalty stop in the 15th minute as he dived to his left to push away McGoldrick's spot kick after Fox had brought down Duffy in the area.

McGoldrick and Duffy were both denied again by Dawson as the Blades threw everything at their rivals. Billy Sharp missed a good chance with his head while Oliver Norwood's free kick was saved again by Dawson with the last touch of the match.

Summary

United did everything but score in this game and will be bitterly disappointed they did not get three points. It was one of those days for their strikers where the ball did not go in. Dawson was in magical form for Wednesday and that penalty save was a huge moment. The Owls have been in poor form but this should give them the lift they need.
