Game Report

Highlights

Jay Rodriguez rescued a point for West Brom in controversial fashion, admitting he handled in the equaliser, in a 2-2 thriller. Aston Villa had twice led through Anwar El Ghazi goals but were pegged back by Dwight Gayle and eventually Rodriguez. Villa remain 8th as a result, missing the chance to climb into the top six, while West Brom are still 3rd.

Detail

West Brom had brought Gareth Barry into their starting eleven while Gayle earned a first start since his injury recently. Aston Villa were unchanged as they looked to continue their good form.

Villa have scored goals for fun of late but the identity of their goalscorer was surprising. El Ghazi opened the scoring on 12 minutes with a goal of extreme fortune as his shot deflected in off Ahmed Hegazi.

West Brom were level though on 28 minutes as Gayle grabbed his 10th league goal of the campaign, who volleyed home from the impressive Harvey Barnes' cross.

Villa were back in front on 59 minutes as El Ghazi scored a wonder goal from 25 yards.

Villa really should have finished this game off with Tammy Abraham, in outstanding form before this game, missing two sitters right in front of goal.

But it was the hosts who rescued a dramatic late draw as Rodriguez scored off his hand from Matty Phillips' cross. The goal stood despite Villa protests and Rodriguez now has 10 league goals for the season.

Summary

West Brom were fortunate to get this draw given the manner of their equaliser. Things are not entirely going fluently for them and Darren Moore will be concerned about consistency. Villa will be desperately annoyed. They played some good stuff but a combination of Abraham's miss and the controversy surrounding the leveller cost them dear.
