Bayern München went back to the top of the Bundesliga as they thrashed title rivals Borussia Dortmund 5 - 0.

This match promised to be one the most hotly contested matches in the Bundesliga for years, but turned into a completely one sided match very quickly.

Dortmund tried to play with their usual style of patiently building from the back and hoped that an extra man in midfield would help them overwhelm the hosts to keep better control of possession.

The guests’ approach very nearly worked perfectly with Mahmoud Dahoud hitting the post from their very first chance when he really should have done better.

Thereafter though Bayern showed their quality as they created numerous chances and were incredibly effective at using Dortmund’s mistakes.

As the goals began to flow for the hosts, the Dortmund players’ heads began to drop and the task became easier and easier for Bayern. At half time the home side led by four goals, but it could have been more.

After the change of ends the tempo of the match slowed down and Bayern were happy to simply control possession and make sure that Dortmund could not get back into the match.

The guests began to make some attacking changes during the second half, but it had no real impact. Bayern found their fifth late on to complete the rout.

This was very much Bayern’s day and they deserved to win the match. Dortmund’s performance was worrying limp and they did not look like a side chasing the title at all.
