Game Report

Highlights

New Derby boss Frank Lampard got off to the perfect start as his Derby side came from behind to earn a dramatic 2-1 win at Reading. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson had given the Royals the lead but Derby debutant Mason Mount levelled before Tom Lawrence found the winner for the Rams deep into stoppage time. It was harsh on Reading who played well in patches but Derby found a way of taking this game by the scruff of the neck.

Detail

Reading had given debuts to Andy Yiadom and David Meyler but had several injured players who missed out. Derby had given first starts to Mount and Harry Wilson but another new boy Jack Marriott was not in the squad. Craig Bryson was back in midfield after ending last season on loan at Cardiff.

As might have been expected the first 45 minutes was very cagey indeed with little in the way of goalmouth chances for either side. Reading dominated possession but could do little with it, a theme that appears to be continuing from last season.

The second half was a different story though as the hosts needed just seven minutes after the restart to take the lead, Bodvarsson heading home from an excellent Mo Barrow cross.

But Derby reacted positively and were level on the hour as Mount's left footed effort beat Vito Mannone who could have done better.

The momentum was with the visitors after that with Mannone saving well to keep out Wilson. And eventually Derby were to win it in the fourth minute of injury time as a sublime header from Lawrence beat Mannone from sub Mason Bennett's cross.

Summary

It might be the opening game of the season but already this could be a huge moment in the Championship campaign. Victory will have given Derby so much confidence that at last this could be their year. As for Reading, there appears to be little change in last season. They still badly need to find the net when they are on top.
