Football Season Review

№2: Barnsley

Barnsley have become a bit of a yo-yo club lately and entered this season hoping to return to the Championship after making the bold move to appoint Daniel Stendel, who had no previous experience of coaching in England. It was clear immediately that Stendel was looking to get the Tykes to play a more continental style of football, as they were looking to keep the ball on the ground and were devastating on the break. Barnsley did not really have any major ups and downs throughout the campaign. They spent the majority of the season near the top of the table and eventually managed to win a three-horse race for the second automatic promotion spot, seeing of challenges by Portsmouth and Sunderland. Stendel deserves a lot of praise for keeping his side competitive despite the frequent injury problems they had, as key men Kieffer Moore, Kenny Dougall and Cauley Woodrow all spent significant time on the sidelines. Up until a few years ago, Barnsley were a very stable Championship club, ending most of their campaigns around the middle of the table. Stendel will now be tasked with helping his side return to that level.
