Football Season Review

№18: Shrewsbury Town

The surprise package of the 2017/18 campaign, Shrewsbury were always going to struggle to repeat such heroics this time around. Even more so after undergoing a summer transfer window that saw manager Paul Hurst as well as the majority of their key players depart. Hurst's decision to leave proved to have been a bad one for both him and the club, as he lasted only months at his new club Ipswich, while the Shrews struggled under John Askey, who was relieved of his duties midway through the season. The decision to part ways with Askey was seen as harsh by sections of fans, given that the manager, who took over during the summer, had to make a wholly new squad gel and one could see the system that he was trying to implement. Sam Ricketts took over following Askey's departure and the Shrews' fortunes gradually improved. They struggled on their travels pretty much throughout the season but were solid at home and eventually did just enough to stay clear of danger. Given all the difficulties that they had last summer, the Shrews will be delighted to have managed to stay up. It remains to be seen what Ricketts can produce now, as he will have the summer to make the squad his own.
