Football Season Review

№8: Boavista FC

A very similar general performance to the two previous seasons meant that Panteras are getting stable as a top half team in Portuguese football. But it wasn’t always like this, this season. Jorge Simão had a great run last season, but this time he was not able to be successful and, by the time he was sacked on the 18th round, Axadrezados were just above the red line. Lito Vidigal arrived from Setúbal just in time to take Boavista back to safety. IT really seemed the best match as Lito’s style clearly suits Boavista’s traditional hard working style. Goalkeeper Helton Leite is clearly the biggest talent on the squad and was having a remarkable season until he picked a serious injury. Ironically, Boavista’s best moment came with his replacement Braccali in goal. It coincided with the (re)appearance of some important players. Obiorah and Yusupha recovered from injuries and the Brazilian Sauer joined in the winter transfer. The three had quite an impact in the final rounds. The team suffered with a lot of injuries and a short squad. For instances, Talocha didn’t have a direct replacement for the left-back position. It was a good thing that the reliable full-back played the entire season in great level. Gonçalo appeared early on the season as a wonderkid in defense, but Lito never gave him much credit. Many attackers had irregular runs, and it had to be the eternal Mateus to deliver consistency and reliability up front.

Player of the Season: Mateus Galiano
