Football Season Review

№12: Crewe Alexandra

It will feel like a missed opportunity for Crewe Alexandra as their inconsistency saw them miss out on a play-off place. David Artell has taken time to get to grips with the job at Gresty Road. Like many of his predecessors he has several talented youngsters at his disposal but moulding them into a team has proved a challenge. He has had no hesitation in blooding the youth but it comes with inconsistent performances and it was illustrated in their 6-0 home win over Morecambe on the opening day, which was followed by a 6-0 thrashing away at Colchester United less than three weeks later. It has taken a while but experienced striker Chris Porter has finally found his shooting boots to finish as leading scorer with 15 goals. A switch to a 4-3-3 formation certainly helped; whilst also bringing improved performances from wingers Callum Ainley and Charlie Kirk either side of him. A strong finish to the end of the season wasn’t enough however as they finished in 12th place. The experience of Paul Green has been crucial in the middle of the park whilst full-back Perry Ng looks set for bigger and better things. Midfielder James Jones failed to kick on whilst Artell looks set to lose three influential players this summer. Goalkeeper Ben Garratt, defender George Ray and striker Jordan Bowery have yet to agree new deals and could be set for pastures new.
