Football Season Review

№21: Cambridge United

It was another season of struggle for Cambridge United, who were eventually guided to safety by head coach Colin Calderwood. There was plenty of optimism going into the new season having finished the last one in good form under head coach Joe Dunne. They started the campaign slowly and by September it was clear they were going to be battling against relegation. Injuries played their part whilst the form of influential George Maris and Jevani Brown remained patchy at best and failed to reach the heights of the previous season. Dunne was sacked at the beginning of September with the side just above the relegation places. Colin Calderwood was appointed as his successor but found the going equally tough. He managed to keep their heads above water despite climbing no higher than 18th place in the table. Their goalscoring problems are illustrated in the fact striker Adebayo Azeez finished as joint leading goalscorer despite leaving for Newport County at the end of January. Calderwood made youngster Dimitar Mitov his first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the more experienced David Forde and he is likely to rely on youth in the future as the budget remains tight at the Abbey Stadium. Keeping hold of their better players will be a challenge this summer and they have already lost full-back Jake Carroll to Motherwell.
