Football Season Review

№10: Stevenage

Dino Maamria’s side endured a frustratingly inconsistent season which saw them miss out on a play-off place on the final day of the season. The Tunisian was unable to rely on the most influential trio of players from the previous season with striker Matt Godden joining Peterborough United before the season started. Striker Danny Newton struggled with an ankle injury all season whilst midfielder Ben Kennedy didn’t want to be at the club and was sent out on loan in January. The side was built on a spine of central defender Scott Cuthbert; the central midfield duo of Joel Byrom and Michael Timlin and experienced striker Alex Revell. They flirted with the play-off places during the first half of the campaign but were unable to stay there. Maamria pulled off something of a masterstroke in the loan capture of midfield playmaker Ilias Chair from Queens Park Rangers in January and he was outstanding; scoring six goals in 16 appearances. He brought the best out of striker Kurtis Guthrie, who finished as leading scorer with 14 goals. It wasn’t enough however as they missed out on the play-offs by just a single point. Luther James-Wildin made a real impact in his first season in the Football League whilst teenage midfielder Arthur Iontton showed plenty of promise. Cuthbert was an ever-present and voted player of the season. If Newton can recover his fitness Boro’ will be a real threat in League Two next season.

Player of the Season: Scott Cuthbert
