Football Season Review

№6: FC Thun

Thun are coming from a rather difficult season, with their final finishing position somewhat masking the struggles that they had during the majority of the campaign. The autumn season was the fact of the Oberlanders playing some truly good football on most occasions, but they were repeatedly thwarted by their own inability to defend and won only three of their opening eighteen games, therefore looking like the most likely side to go down, alongside Vaduz, with a half of the season gone. Things remained pretty much unchanged after the winter break, with an additional blow being the departure of manager Jeff Saibene, who was originally set to leave at the end of the season, but instead went a month into the spring season, with youth team coach Mauro Lustrinelli and his assistant Marc Schneider stepping into his shoes. The duo initially struggled but eventually managed to find a winning formula, as the Oberlanders ended the season with a run of eight games without a defeat, with this run moving them away from the bottom of the table for good and even maintaining their European hopes until the penultimate round. Things would have probably been better for them had they not had so many injury problems, particularly of defenders, as all of the managers that they had during the season struggled to form defensive lines that truly gelled and unsurprisingly so, with constant injuries of important players forcing them into constant changes. Thun have always been a selling club and will once again lose important players during the summer. Christian Fassnacht has already agreed a move to Young Boys, while further important players could leave. Moreover, Mauro Lustrinelli will leave to take over as the manager of the Swiss U16 side, so Schneider will be in charge on his own next season. All in all, the Thuner have a challenging summer ahead of them and need to do their homework if they are to avoid trouble next season.
