Football Season Review

Champions: Basel

There was more of the usual for Basel on the domestic front, as the Red-Blues exerted absolute dominance in the domestic championship and won the league with five games to spare, while also winning the national cup. Games in which the Red-Blues played to the best of their abilities were few and far between, with Urs Fischer's side instead becoming comeback masters, defeating their opponents after trailing on numerous occasions. As superior as they were in the domestic championship, there is no doubt that Basel's season was not fully satisfying to their fans, given that they once again failed to achieve European success - they qualified directly from the group stage of the Champions League and finished at the bottom of a group containing Arsenal, PSG and Bulgarian champions Ludogorets. Given the fact that it was their second consecutive disappointing European campaign, there was not much surprise when the club announced in late April that they would be parting ways with Urs Fischer and that they would appoint Raphael Wicky next season, with Fischer therefore leading the team in the last month of the season knowing that he would be gone, but having no problems securing the domestic cup despite it. The general consensus from the evidence seen this season is that the gap between Basel and the other Swiss teams is ever growing. However, the Red-Blues will be expected to have a much better European campaign next time around.
