Football Season Review

№10: Vaduz

It has been a truly disappointing season for Vaduz, who spent the majority of the campaign at the bottom of the table and had their relegation sealed with two games left to play, as their three-year stay in the top flight came to an end. As is usually the case, Vaduz played some decent football in the majority of their games, but once again struggled for quality in the final third. They solved that problem by bringing in Armando Sadiku on loan in the 2015/16 season and tried to do the same midway through the current campaign. However, Sadiku opted to join Lugano instead and played a huge role in the Ticiners' renaissance in the second half of the season, while Vaduz kept struggling to score and rarely, if ever, looked like escaping the drop. The Vaduz board even opted for drastic measures midway through the spring season and fired Giorgio Contini after five games in charge, but the appointment of Roland Vrabec as his replacement has changed absolutely nothing, as Vaduz kept playing decent football without having an end product and while leaving themselves very vulnerable at the back and ending the season with by far the worst defensive record in the league. Another thing that hardly helped the Liechtensteiners was their abysmal injury situation in the second half of the season, as Contini and Vrabec usually had to do without at least five or six injured players, while Moreno Costanzo, their most talented attacking player, ended up missing almost the entire second half the season. In the end, there was no other logical conclusion but relegation for Vaduz this season and they now obviously face a big summer, as they will be desperate to rebuild and try to win back promotion at the first time of asking.
