Football Season Review

Champions: Young Boys Bern

Young Boys are coming from an outstanding season, which saw them manage to win their first domestic title in 32 years and end Basel's 8-year monopoly on the Swiss championship. Adi Hutter's men started the season with a runaway train and were 16 points clear at one point during the autumn season, but slowed down near the turn of the year and that, combined with Basel's improving form, made it look like the Berners might miss out on the title again. However, all such doubts were dispelled soon after the start of the spring season, as the Berners returned to their best, while Basel started dropping points left and right, with the result of this being that Young Boys secured the title with five games to spare and came close to breaking the Super League record for most points. There were two blemishes on their season, however, as they failed to make it out of their Europa League group and also failed to win the domestic double, having lost the Swiss Cup final to Zurich. However, they have had a season that they would have surely gladly accepted if offered to them before kick-off. The big question now is whether they can build on this title and challenge again this season, with the impending departure of their manager Adi Hutter, who will become the new boss of Eintracht Frankfurt, certainly not being a good sign.
