Football Season Review

№7: Sion

Sion's eventual seventh-placed finish did not really reflect on where the Sitteners spent the majority of their campaign, as they spent the most of the season battling against the drop. They started the season with so much hope after signing Lugano's prized manager Paolo Tramezzani and bringing in several interesting signings and surely enough started with back-to-back away wins. However, it soon became obvious that Tramezzani's purely counter-attacking approach was not a good option for the Sitteners and they went on a 13-game run during which they won only once and that cost Tramezzani his job. As is usually the case with Sion, the managerial carousel started to spin following dismissal and former Barcelona man Gabri had an ill-fated spell in charge late in the autumn season before Maurizio Jacobacci was named their boss and eventually managed to stir them to safety. Jacobacci, who took over in early February, certainly did not have things easy, as he gradually improved Sion's football and their home in particular, with the Sitteners spending a fair share of the spring season at the bottom of the table and only managed to escape the drop late on. The season was also marred by bad atmosphere inside the squad, with five first-team players including Kevin Constant and Elsad Zverotic being brandished to train with the U21s midway through the season. Due to guiding the club to safety, Jacobacci has had his contract extended until the end of the 2018/19 season and now has a huge summer ahead of him, as he will be expected to part ways with a lot of players and bring in many others.
