Football Season Review

№10: Lausanne Sport

Lausanne are coming from a season which saw them show so much promise at times, only to end up relegated to the Challenge League. Les Bleus initially struggled badly and collected only a point from their opening five games, but lost only four of the following fifteen and ended the autumn season inside the top half and looking like strong candidates for European places. Moreover, they also had a takeover, with the club's new owners deciding to invest in the squad, with the list of winter signings being very promising and involving Simone Rapp from Thun, who was the league's top scorer at the moment of signing. Absolutely everything looked to be in place for Lausanne to enjoy a superb spring season and qualify for Europe but what transpired is certainly difficult to explain as, despite having a good squad, les Bleus went on to win only two of their seventeen spring season games, with one of these wins coming in the final round, when they were already relegated. Fabio Celestini was repeatedly linked with a move abroad due to the good work he did with Lausanne, but ended up losing his job midway through the spring season, with caretaker Ilija Borenovic failing to improve les Bleus' fortunes. It did not take the club long after the end of the season to name Giorgio Contini their new manager. Contini is no stranger to the Challenge League, having won promotion from that division with Vaduz, and will be expected to do the same with Lausanne at the first time of asking.
