Football Season Review

№4: Zurich

It sounds somewhat bizarre that Zurich were in the Challenge League a year ago, as the Whites' 2015/16 season infamously ended in relegation. It was therefore the Whites' season of return to the top flight but, despite that, they entered it with big ambitions, with their goal being to qualify for Europe. They started the season in a manner that even suggested that they could end up fighting for the title but, while sound defensively, it soon became clear that the Whites just did not have the firepower to compete with Basel and, especially, Young Boys. Their form continued to decline over time and, with the side still inside the top four, the board opted to part ways with Uli Forte early in the spring season and opted to replace him with Ludovic Magnin, who got his first first-team managerial job after previously working with their youth teams. The Whites' league form did not really pick up under Magnin, but the lack of real competition allowed the Whites to end the season at fourth. However, what was the real crowning jewel of their season and Magnin's reign as well was the fact that they went all the way in the Swiss Cup and beat Young Boys in the final to claim their second cup in three years. All in all, it was a superb season of return to the top flight for the Whites, but the lack of consistency that they have been displaying during the entire current year will certainly be of concern going into the summer.
