Football Season Review

№13: FSV Mainz

A season of turmoil ended with Mainz steering clear of the relegation thanks to a good run of form at the end but they fell short of pre-season expectations of challenging for a top half finish. Mainz were looking to improve on a couple of underwhelming campaigns under Sandro Schwarz but the current campaign got off to a dismal start as they lost eight of their opening 11 games to sit in the bottom three. The club acted by removing Schwarz and bringing in Achim Beierlorzer, who had himself lost his job at Koln around the same time. The gamble looked to have paid off with Mainz experiencing a bounce in the results but they quickly returned to their inconsistent ways and found themselves uncomfortably close to the relegation zone for most of the campaign. It was not until February that they were able to string together a consistent run of form and a return of nine points from their final five games ensured they finished clear of the relegation zone. There was not much to speak of with regards to performances as Beierlorzer struggled to name a settled lineup, especially in the center of the midfield and in the attack. Injuries meant Mateta and winter signing Ji spent large portions of the campaign on the treatment table and were limited to just 12 and 1 start respectively. Quaison was the one bright spot, ending the season as the top scorer with 13 goals but will need support from his team mates if he is to improve or at least match that tally next season. Mainz also struggled defensively, conceding 65 goals and ending the campaign with just four cleansheets, and they will need reinforcements if they are to ensure a far more comfortable campaign next season

Player of the Season: Robin Quaison
