Football Season Review

№16: Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen managed to survive one of their worst campaigns in recent years as they just about avoided relegation thanks to away goal rules. A dismal campaign saw Bremen register just eight victories over the course of the season and they had the worst points haul since returning to the Bundesliga in nearly four decades. Bremen had a good record playing away from home but it was at home where they struggled, winning just two of the 17 games played and collecting nine points, just one more than Paderborn who finished at the foot of the table. Coach Kohfeldt was handicapped by injuries to a number of key players over the course of the season with striker Fullkrug missing almost the whole season while other absentees included Bargfrede, Augustinsson, Bartels and Toprak, all of whom would have formed part of the starting lineup had they been fit. Bremen looked destined for the drop and needed a big win in their final game against Koln to ensure they got a second shot at survival after pipping Dusseldorf to the relegation playoffs spot. They struggled against Heidenheim in the playoffs as well, playing out a stalemate in the first leg before a 2-2 draw in the second leg ensured their survival for the next season
