Football Season Review

№4: Hibernian

Hibernian's first season back in the Premiership was probably as good as they could've hoped for, finishing fourth in the league behind Celtic, Aberdeen, and Rangers respectively. It was an impressive season given that Neil Lennon's men had just come up from the Championship, with a top six place surely their pre-season goal. Just two wins from the opening six games led to a shaky opening from the Leith side, but a credible point at Celtic Park in September really kick-started belief and confidence in the Hibs side that they could trouble the top sides in the division. Hibs would go on to lose just three more games between then and the New Year, but Lennon was frustrated at that stage of the campaign with the amount of draws being accumulated. There began to be a strong respect from clubs around the country when playing Hibs, with the energy in midfield from McGinn and McGeouch in particular leading to many dominant midfield displays throughout the campaign. Multiple derby victories were followed by victories over Rangers at Ibrox and Celtic at Easter Road, as the Hibees remained in the hunt for second up until the second last game of the season. Defeat at Tynecastle spelled the end of their second-place hopes, but a 5-5 draw at home to Rangers on final day summed up their season in one match. In the cups, Hibs will be pleased at reaching the semi-final of the Betfred Cup, but a Scottish Cup fourth-round defeat at Hearts will still stick in their throats. It was an extremely productive season overall for Hibs, and Lennon has a massive task on his hands holding onto McGeouch and McGinn, whilst Kamberi and Allan both go back to their parent clubs and need replacing.
