Football Season Review

№8: St Johnstone

A disappointing season for Tommy Wright’s men saw St Johnstone finish outside the top six for the first time seven years, with the Perth side eventually finishing eighth. Starting the season with three wins on the bounce in the Scottish Premiership, there were no signs of the turmoil to come as Saints carried on where they left off last year and made it five games unbeaten including a draw against champions Celtic. Everything looked fine, with loan signing Michael O’Halloran returning to the club and proving a handful for opposition strikers, until a lull in October in which they lost five games out of six, picking up only one point out of a possible 18. They seemed to have recovered from it but they suffered a blow with O’Halloran picking up an injury and then being recalled by Rangers and went on a run of 10 games from Christmas in which they only picked up one win. It saw them slide down the table into the bottom six, almost flirting with relegation danger at stages and they never recovered despite a late rally. Saints made no impact in either of the cups with early exits in both. No Saints player made it into double digits in goals this season, despite Steven MacLean ending his long association with the club with a hat trick. The summer will be one of upheaval at McDiarmad Park with a number of key and veteran players heading for pastures new. How Tommy Wright reacts to their departure and his ability to get adequate replacements will have a large bearing on Saints future and ability to get back into the top six.
