Football Season Review

№7: Motherwell

It was yet another Summer revolt for Motherwell as a host of new players came in. Yet, in the end, manager Stephen Robinson was able to lead his side to two domestic cup finals in a hugely memorable season for the Steelmen, who finished the season in seventh. Just two defeats in their opening seven Premiership matches gave the Motherwell fans hope of a productive campaign, with Moult on fire and looking like their main man once again. As Robinson's side received plaudits for their fresh aggressive play, the Steelmen booked a Betfred Cup semi-final clash with Celtic after a stunning 2-0 win at Hampden over Rangers. However, a 2-0 loss in the final to Celtic led to a big drop in form for the Steelmen heading into December. Just one win in 11 Premiership games succeeded that result, but towards the end of that run it was clear that new signing Main - signed to replace Moult as number one striker - was going to make a big impact after scoring some early goals. As their league form continued to be patchy throughout the second half of the season, it was uncanny how Motherwell were able to grind out victories in the Scottish Cup matches. Added to that, a horrible and lengthy injury list meant that the Steelmen were often reduced in terms of squad size, and in the end just missed out on a top six place. A 3-0 Scottish Cup semi-final win over Aberdeen, however, gave the Fir Park side another cup final to look forward to. Barring a 5-1 mauling at home off of St Johnstone, Motherwell finished the season with some positive results as they built up momentum heading into Hampden. However, on the day, they were once again overpowered by a strong Celtic side 2-0 in the final. The likes of Kipre, Main, Tanner, and Campbell had some thoroughly impressive individual campaigns, with Motherwell once again giving youth a chance to flourish. However, it will be Robinson's job to once again trim the fat from the squad whilst also adding some new faces to stay competitive after the removal of the deadwood. With the likes of Kipre's future hanging in the balance, it's important Robinson can continue to wheel and deal in the transfer market to keep this Motherwell side going strong ahead of next season.
