Football Season Review

№7: IFK Gothenburg

Gothenburg overachieved and at some point even looked like potential candidates for medals, but ongoing complicated financial situation forced the club to sell star players in the summer and this meant that all White and Blues had to settle for was top half finish. Still the young group of players offered many exciting displays throughout the campaign and coach Asbaghi was close to winning the award for Manager of the Year. Making themselves tough to beat was the approach and with only 3 losses in the opening 22 rounds, 2 of those in the first 3 games, Gothenburg were just behind the top 3 come August. Unfortunately things got tougher in the summer with as many as 4 regular starters sold abroad + explosive winger Lagemyr (4 goals and 4 assists in the first 12 rounds) suffered season-ending injury in early July. Added to that the poor discipline of the team, in almost every one of the final 10 rounds there was at least 1 player suspended, and the endless small injury problems for striker Vibe and it was no surprise that the form dipped from September onwards. The last 8 rounds brought 5 defeats (W2 D1) and this was why the impressive overall season couldn’t be finished in higher position. Still coach Asbaghi can be very pleased with most of his players and once again the key figure was the Georgian maestro Kharaishvili. Soder also scored many crucial goals, while Calisir was the rock at the back with only youngsters starting around him once Starfelt was sold. Gothenburg are unlikely to keep the sought after coach Asbaghi at the helm, which would mean new manager trying to overachieve in 2020 with squad that once again will be consistent mainly of very young players.
