Football Season Review

№2: Malmo

Malmo will be disappointed to have finished second and they are now without an Allsvenskan domestic title for two seasons. That's two seasons too long for a team with such high ambitions, and to see AIK and Djurgarden revel in title success while Malmo are empty handed will really hurt the club. But Uwe Rosler's side did their utmost to spoil Djurgardens party and thrashing Orebro 5-0 on the last day of the season indicated that they were ready for the title should they slip up. And it looked possible when Norrkoping were two goals to the good but in true champions fashion Djurgarden fought back to get the point needed. There were two patches where the title was lost. Firstly Malmo could only take one point from their two opening games against Hacken and relegated GIF Sundsvall. And then secondly a damaging run of three straight draws in the summer against Sirius, Ostersunds and Hacken again meant Rosler's team were losing valuable terrain at the top. It could have something to do with the Europa League qualification process, but the squad should've been good enough to get through both unscathed. Malmo will be challenging again next season, and they might well be unstoppable. They will be hungrier than ever to right the wrongs of the past two campaigns and, if Djurgarden muster as feeble a title defence as AIK did this year, then Malmo will be ready to pounce. One thing is for sure, despite Malmo ending the season empty handed they played their part in what was one of the most exciting Allsvenskan title races for many many years.
