Football Season Review

№12: Ostersunds

Ostersunds are probably one of the saddest stories of the Swedish domestic season, as their fall from grace amid financial irregularities off the field definitely affected the team's form on it. Their ascent from the lower leagues to the Allsvenskan was long looked upon as a fantastic success story, but things have quickly nosedived since then. Ian Burchnall's side made a great start to the season losing only one of their eight first league matches. But what followed the 4-0 hammering against Hammarby in mid-May was nothing short of calamitous. They only won two more games all season, and the 7-1 tanking against IFK Goteborg on the final day of the campaign suggests that the worst is still to come. Where the club goes from here who knows, but the repercussions of off field problems might still impact their 2020 season. Player recruitment will be affected definitely and with the massive debt engulfing the club now that the bubble's burst they might do well to actually keep their place in the Allsvenskan. It's a sorry mess for a club who ran Arsenal close in the Europa League only last year. Few falls from grace have been as brutal as this one in Swedish top flight football, and Ostersunds might not even have landed yet.
