Football Season Review

№2: Peterborough United

A successful season for Peterborough as they secured a long-awaited promotion back to the Championship. The Posh were in the automatic promotion race for the whole season but it was not all plain sailing. There were five defeats in six games during November, which included an FA Cup defeat by non-league Chorley. They recovered from this by only losing two of their next 18 games in all competitions, picking up 12 wins. A few more wobbles followed but they managed to secure 2nd place with a dramatic 3-3 draw against Lincoln in the penultimate game of the season. Their home form was key in securing promotion. They picked up 50 points from their 23 home matches, winning 15 times and only losing on three occasions. Like with the sides that Darren Ferguson has previously built at Peterborough, this one was exciting and full of goals. They were the league’s highest scorers with 83 goals. The attacking trio of Sammie Szmodics, Sriki Dembele and Jonson Clarke-Harris were a handful throughout the campaign. Clarke-Harris was the standout performer. The summer signing from Bristol Rovers won the League One Golden Boot after netting 31 league goals including the last minute penalty against Lincoln which confirmed promotion. They look more than capable of competing well in the Championship next season. Along with their goal scoring prowess they also had the fourth best defensive record this season.
