Football Season Review

№18: Plymouth Argyle

A rollercoaster first season back in League One for Plymouth ended poorly but they managed to stay up. After a 4-3 home win over Lincoln in late February they sat in 10th position, four points off a play-off place. However, then things started to unravel as they recorded five straight defeats. A brief respite followed but they ended the season with six losses in their last seven matches. The key to their early successes was a brand of attractive passing football and an excellent home record. In the latter part of the season, they were too easy to play and score against. They ended up with the second worst defensive record, having conceded 80 goals. Ryan Lowe’s side had the third worst away record in the division. One factor in this could be the long distance they have to travel to away games. From their 23 matches on the road, they only picked 16 points. Luke Jephcott was a standout player in the first half of the campaign but his form mirrored Plymouth’s. Up until early February he had scored 16 league goals but in the subsequent 19 matches he played, he failed to score. Captain Joe Edwards was a reliable figure, the right wing-back / full-back was the club’s second top goalscorer with seven league goals. Improvements defensively are certainly needed for next season. A major overhaul of the squad has already started with the five senior centre-backs from this season already confirmed as leaving the club.
