Football Season Review

№12: Crewe Alexandra

Crewe Alexandra can be content with their first season back in League 1. They outperformed the three teams who came up from League 2 with them and showed their can compete with the best. David Artell claimed he wasn’t content however after being frustrated with his side’s inconsistent performances. He is clearly a hard task master, with several key men being hit by injury, and a January transfer window that saw them lose full-back Perry Ng to Cardiff City. It could have been worse with full-back Harry Pickering loaned back for the rest of the season by Blackburn Rovers. Given that scenario, and working with his usual small squad of players, in the midst of a global Covid-19 pandemic, the Railwaymen should be pleased with their top half finish. Artell has some extremely talented youngsters, in the likes of Charlie Kirk, Ryan Wintle, Tom Lowery and Owen Dale, and they are already attracting the attention of bigger clubs. It was a breakthrough season for defender Luke Offord, who looks to be the next player off a never-ending production line. Keeping this squad together will be Artell’s first task this summer, and combined with a handful of shrewd experienced additions, his lofty ambitions of a promotion push could just be realised next season.

Player of the Season: Tom Lowery
