Football Season Review

№17: Shrewsbury Town

A difficult season for Shrewsbury. They did well to stay in the division. They made a decent start but a run of no win in eight saw them plummet to second bottom of the table in November and manager Sam Ricketts lost his job. The experienced Steve Cotterill was appointed and there was an immediate upturn in results with the Shrews going seven league games unbeaten. However, Cotterill then contracted Covid-19 and spent most of the rest of the season away from the club, either in hospital or recovering at home. He continued to select the team and provide advice to assistant boss Aaron Wilbraham. The team continued to pick up results and were never in danger of relegation as the season came to an end despite finishing the campaign with six losses in their last eight matches. Shrewsbury’s home form was disappointing throughout the campaign. They only picked up 23 points from their 23 games at the Montgomery Waters Meadow. On the playing staff, consistent performers throughout the season included ever-present Josh Vela and central midfield partner Oliver Norburn. Exciting young January additions revitalised the team. Attacking midfielder Harry Chapman, on loan from Blackburn, made a crucial impact, scoring some brilliant goals. Manchester City loanee Nathanael Ogbeta, was excellent in a left wing-back role. With Cotterill now recovered, Shrewsbury can look forward to a more stable campaign next season. They have the makings of a good side with an experienced and astute manager.
