Mark Bonner will be hoping to bring some stability to Cambridge United after another disappointing campaign. He succeeded Colin Calderwood as head coach at the end of January and made an immediate impact as caretaker boss. They enjoyed a productive February before the Covid-19 pandemic drew the season to a halt shortly afterwards. With PPG used to decide the final table, leaving the U’s in 16th place, the club moved quickly to make Bonner’s appointment permanent and they have enjoyed a relatively quiet summer so far. He has lost the services of influential midfielder George Maris to Mansfield Town, although his departure was expected. Wes Hoolahan brings plenty of experience with him whilst Paul Digby joins from Stevenage and will fill the void left by Paul Lewis’s switch to Tranmere Rovers. Bonner’s use of loanees was key to their improvement before the premature end to the last campaign and he will be hoping to find another gem like midfielder Jack Roles, who impressed on his temporary move from Tottenham Hotspur. With the transfer window not set to close until October, he is likely to recruiting right up to the deadline as he looks to continue his encouraging start in the job.
