Ryan Broom’s departure for Peterborough United might be a blessing in disguise for the Robins as they look to bounce back from a crushing disappointment this summer. Michael Duff’s side took a two-goal lead into the second leg of their play-off semi-final with Northampton Town but froze on their own turf and their abject surrender saw them miss out on a trip to Wembley and possible promotion. Duff looked utterly shell-shocked afterwards and faces a real test of his managerial credentials as the Robins look to recover. The loss of the creative and influential Broom to Posh is another blow, however the money received should allow Duff to strength his squad and have another push for promotion. The Covid-19 pandemic has hit many clubs hard and Cheltenham Town have certainly been feeling the pinch. Luke Varney, who finished one goal behind leading goalscorer Broom, has been allowed to leave and they will have to rely on the loan market again. It was certainly successful last time around however and West Bromwich Albion’s Josh Griffiths will start the season between the sticks with Scott Flinders still recovering from a long-term injury. The experienced Liam Sercombe is a shrewd addition and the club are in safe hands with Duff at the helm.
