Although it seemed like Getafe were doomed for relegation last season, they managed to turn it around and stay up. Under Michel, they lost each of their first seven games of the season. But, once he was replaced by Quique Sanchez Flores, who knows the club so well, Getafe drastically improved. Getafe ultimately finished 15th, but they had the 10th best record in the division if just looking at the games following Sanchez Flores’ appointment. He made them much more solid with a 5-3-2 system, while he got the fans on board too and the team only lost two out of 15 home games after the coaching change. This year, Getafe go into the new campaign with Sanchez Flores in charge from the start and with a much improved squad. They have made several astute signings, such as picking off good players from relegated Granada or securing talented winger Portu from Real Sociedad. It’s true that some of last season’s starters have left, but they have been adequately replaced and Getafe even managed to keep Borja Mayoral, the most impressive of last season’s loanees, at the club. He and Enes Unal were a deadly duo up front towards the end of last season and should be again. It is really promising for Getafe as they prepare for the new season. They don’t really have any weaknesses, other than the obvious fact that the overall level of the squad can’t match the top teams. But, this is looking like a very solid project, given their budget.

Target

Top half. Considering Getafe would have finished 10th had last season started when Quique Sanchez Flores took over, a top half finish with this impressive squad is a realistic objective.
