In 2023 Houston Dynamo played solid football at home and despite their weaknesses on the road they lifted the US Open Cup and also reached the Conference Finals. Houston had the second-best home record in the entire MLS last season. They were not even top 10 on the road though and that’s why they qualified for the play-offs only as the 4th best team in their Conference. Despite the harder path Houston reached their Conference’s final but there defending champions LAFC beat them. Not having a home advantage for this match proved costly for Houston. It has been a winter of mainly departures for the Dynamo. The squad was trimmed a lot. This is a bit concerning with Houston now set to be busy in the CONCACAF Champions League on top of the MLS and the defence of their US Open Cup title. Still, the decision to release players that were not fitting in coach Ben Olsen’s system is not such a bad move. Right now Houston have lots of wage space and ability to improve the roster significantly in the coming weeks. Ben Olsen enjoyed great first season in charge and the ambitions will be even higher in 2024 with the main core of players staying put and hungry for more.

Target

Top 4 finish and deep play-off run is the goal. Need to find a way to be better on the road to achieve that.
