Middlesbrough enjoyed a steady season under Neil Warnock, which is what many expected heading into the 2020/21 season. The 72 year-old kept the squad together and hung in the play-off race until the final month of the season, which will be seen as a success. Warnock has operated on an extremely limited budget, although the shrewd signings of Ipeazu from Wycombe (6 goals last season) and Ameobi in particular will provide much needed quality going forward, something Middlesbrough severely lacked last campaign. There does appear to be some optimism amongst supporters heading into the season, which can only help the squad. The defensive unit under Warnock has been stellar and will be expected to continue on in the same fashion in the new season. There's no doubt McNair will continue to lead the back line and the fantastic addition of Joe Lumley from QPR can only help the cause. Boro remain compact under Warnock and have proven very difficult to break down, even against the division's better teams last season. Boro have struggled in recent times to maintain an attacking threat and it showed last season, as Warnock's men threw away points on many occasions due to their toothless attack. Despite the Ikpeazu addition, there is a lot of work to do for the staff to turn this around and steer Boro to the promised land.

Target

Play-offs. Could Middlesbrough finally break into the play-offs? They certainly have the man for the job and it does look achievable for the Teessiders. Warnock will need to use every trick up his sleeve to squeeze this Boro side into the play-off places come the end of the season.
