Morton struggled last season and were bottom of the table by mid-season. The club sacked Gus MacPherson and brought in former player Dougie Imrie for his first managerial role. Results improved with enough points gathered to avoid a relegation scare. Morton were hard-working difficult to beat, but wins were limited as they ended the season on a low. The focus of their attack, Gozi Ugwu, has departed along with Gary Oliver and Gavin Reilly. The defence will need remodelled too as Brandon, McEntee, McLean, Ledger and Russell have all left. Iain Wilson’s stay proved short-lived as the midfielder signed for Queen of the South. Brian Schwake has signed on loan as a replacement for goalkeeper Jack Hamilton. Experienced Jack Baird and Darragh O’Connor are set to form the core of a new defence along with Carlo Pignatiello. Grant Gillespie will add some bite in midfield after signing from Queen’s Park. Another former Spider, Jai Quitongo, adds depth to the forward line. Winger Jaze Kabia has also signed on loan from Livingston. Morton are another club who are struggling to remain full-time. They will probably remain hard-working and awkward opponents but their squad lacks quality and depth compared to others in the Championship. Finding the right players to take on loan could make or break their season.

Target

Another season of consolidation would be acceptable. Morton are difficult to beat, but they have little money and a title challenge looks beyond them.
