Were too inconsistent last season, finishing outside the play-offs despite a late resurgence of sorts. During the close season, boss Ruben Zadkovich resigned from his role, supposedly interested in working abroad, although he’s not yet been appointed by a foreign team - curious how that works, isn’t it? In early August, Alen Stajcic was announced as his replacement; a manager big on youth development. In July, they had to contend with the fact that owner Tony Sage left, having bled himself dry over the years to keep the club afloat, casting some doubts over their capacity to exist moving forward. Have made decent signings but nothing exciting due to the concerns over their A-League future. Carluccio has shown some good potential in spells last season (not to mention flexibility), Bozanic is very good at keeping the ship steady, and Sail is an excellent addition between the sticks. Kamau could be a genius signing if he rediscovers his potential but he looked very short of confidence on loan at Melbourne Victory last season. Have lost some really good squad players pre-season - Dowse, Burke-Gilroy especially. Also lost the likes of Elsey, Ryan Williams, Jelacic, and Clisby, all of which were really important players, the latter trio predominantly impressing in attacking situations. Although their new arrivals have been presentable, there’s no star quality in midfield to replace Jelacic and/or Ryan Williams so chance creation will be tough this season, although chance conversion should remain high with star striker Taggart back on their books. Will get Khelifi back from long-term injury, which is like a new signing - he was amazing as a wing-back last season. If he, McEneff, Amini, and Taggart can stay injury/suspension-free (not likely) then they’ll have a dangerous attacking foundation. Their defence looks slow but strong. New goalkeeper Sail has looked quite nervy since his transfer, which could be a problem. They can’t have high expectations for this group, not after losing such important personnel. Their top realistic goal has to be the play-offs but it’s hard to imagine them having enough to make it.
