Deep depression after the celebration in 2018. The appearence of the Jesus' Flamengo exposed two big limitations on Palmeiras: their squad wasn't as strong as one thought it was; their principles were highly old-fashioned and outdated. Still, a joint 2nd place with rivals Santos in the end. Bringing Vanderlei Luxemburgo on board wasn't exactly the smartest move from the board if they wanted to modernize the team. Luxemburgo isn't just quite old fashioned himself: he's a big proponent of old-school habits and tries to make it clear on every action he takes. His excellent job with Vasco in 2019 will reinforce his behaviour and convince him that he can adopt the same principles to a title competitor like Palmeiras. Club lost their biggest star of last two seasons, Dudu, but that shouldn't be much of a problem. It seems like the right time for the winger to leave, as other talents are emerging, eager to bring Palmeiras some fresh new moves in attack. Gabriel Menino and Gabriel Veron are obvious hot prospects in attack, while Patrick has already made an impact in 2020 regional competition in midfield. Together with the young talent, there are enough quality experienced players to allow 'Luxa' to build a winning side and compete for the three points in any venue on the country. Weverton, Gomez, Hugo, Rocha at the back, Ramires, Lucas Lima, Bruno Henrique and Zé Rafael in the middle, and Luiz Adriano and Willian in attack are as good as any top player in the country.

Target

The coach outdated ideas, the excessive importance of players like Felipe Melo and the frustrating inability of some players to show their quality with the green jersey (Lucas Lima, Veiga, Scarpa...) are the factors that can harm Verdão from challenging Flamengo for the title.
