Tambov managed to secure qualification into the top flight of Russian football eventually after a few seasons of narrow misses, finishing top despite a change of manager late in the season and a few bad results, and will be now looking forward to what will be certainly a challenging campaign against the best in the country. Aleksandr Grigoryan, a controversial figure who was manager of Anzhi in the top-flight for a couple of months back in 2017, is the man in charge early in the season and he will be looking forward to instil confidence and belief in a squad that is very much lacking in eye-catching or impressive players. Tambov have been the most active of the teams in the transfer market and have already added a massive 14 players to the squad. Most of them are decent to below-average players who have importantly played in the top-flight and will bring the needed know-how into a squad light on that experience. From the ones remaining from last season, Valeriu Ciuperca stands out as a good and cultured midfielder who has an eye for goal. On the other hand, the lack of a real scorer in the squad is a worry, with Khyzyr Appaev finishing as leading scorer with just eight goals. The main loss during the transfer campaign is Dmitri Chistyakov, a promising centre-back who joined Rostov.

Target

Tambov will be certainly up against it in the battle to stay up and will require something pretty special to actually buck the recent trend of prompted teams immediately going down.
