In Brief

Mexico two out of two at World Cup 2018. Araujo and Reyes failed to travel with the squad. Lozano should be fine.

Looking Back

Mexico took another step towards the last 16 of the World Cup as they defeated South Korea 2-1 in Rostov. Goals from Carlos Vela (a penalty) and Javier Hernandez allowed the North Americans to pick up their second win of the competition, although they did suffer a late scare.

They have now won both their games by a single goal, having defeated Germany in their opening match 1-0 thanks to a strike from Hirving Lozano.

Mexico have lost two of their last eight matches, with any result other than a defeat sufficient to guide them into the knockout stages. Their previous seven internationals in 2017 prior to their match against South Korea were against European opponents.

Looking Ahead

Lozano seemed to pick up a knock against South Korea on Saturday, which should put something of a question mark over his participation. However, it seems likely that he will be able to play as normal and the coach hinted that way on Tuesday,

Nestor Araujo and Diego Reyes dropped out of the original squad due to injury.

Head coach Juan Carlos Osorio is a man known for his tinkering with the squad, yet he made only one change between the Germany game and the South Korea fixture, and it would be surprising to see significant alterations again.

Points of Interest

Mexico’s fixture against South Korea four days previous to this clash was the first time that both teams have scored in one of their matches during 2018.

Sweden

In Brief

Sweden shattered by late Germany goal last weekend. Form has been weak of late. Do not score regularly. Illness bug has hampered the squad. No injuries.

Looking Back

Sweden suffered a tremendous blow to their World Cup hopes on Saturday as they went down 2-1 to Germany in a heart-breaking manner. They had led the game 1-0 and were still well placed when 1-1 with the Germans down to 10 men. However, a last-minute goal means they now need to beat Mexico to qualify.

The form of the Swedes has been rather indifferent since they defeated Italy to qualify for the World Cup; they have won only two of their eight fixtures – and one of those was against a weakened Denmark side.

Games involving Sweden do not tend to involve many goals; only two of their last 11 have produced more than two. They have not scored more than once in a game in any of these.

Looking Ahead

A sickness bug has been going around the camp, which prevented Victor Lindelhof playing the opening fixture. It also saw Pontus Jansson, Filip Helander and Marcus Rohden travel for the Germany match individually. It is not expected to prevent anyone from playing and the coach said on Tuesday that they will be fit.

Star man Emil Forsberg has been a major disappointment thus far. The RB Leipzig man has been their weakest offensive player, despite his billing. Nevertheless, he should retain his place.

Strikers John Guidetti and Isaac Kiese Thelin are expected to be on the bench once more. Marcus Berg and Ola Toivonen, who scored against Germany, both have much better records at international level.

Jakub Johansson failed to make the initial squad due to injury.

Points of Interest

Any win for Sweden would carry them through regardless, due to their superior head-to-head record over Mexico, which will remain the case even if Germany also win.
