South Korea

In Brief

Already out of contention after suffering back-to-back narrow defeats. Unlikely to stop eight-game winless run at World Cups. Six players missing the tournament through injuries. J.-h. Park also sidelined. S.-y. Ki ruled out after last game.

Looking Back

South Korea were simply second-best when facing Mexico in their second match in Russia and despite offering better attacking threat compared to their first match and actually scoring their first goal in four matches the Koreans lost 1:2. Son’s strike didn’t come until stoppage-time and technically Korea lost the game long before the end.

South Korea suffered six defeats and managed just two draws in their last eight matches at World Cups.

Looking Ahead

Coach Shin is likely to consider some changes to his line-up and experienced Koo is strong candidate for the left wing. He has been playing in the Bundesliga for the past four years.

Captain Ki finished the Mexico game on one leg after sustaining an ankle injury late in the match and he is unavailable. Experienced Koo might replace him, despite the fact that he is more comfortable on the left wing.

Korea also have major problems at left-back after the regular in that role got injured before the tournament, he is one of six squad members that are not in Russia due to long-term issues, while his replacement Park got sidelined in the first game against Sweden and is not going to return.

Points of Interest

South Korea lost six of their last eight matches, this including the friendlies before the start of the tournament, and their only win from February onwards was 2:0 success vs. Honduras.

Germany

Last updated: Wed 27 June 2018 08:58
In Brief

Kept their hopes of a last 16 place alive with a dramatic win on matchday 2. Need a win by two clear goals to ensure progression. Benedickt Höwedes and Mario Götze two of those not with the squad in Russia. Sebastian Rudy out of action here. Jerome Boateng banned for a match after red card. Mats Hummels a slight doubt.

Looking Back

Germany left it very late to score their winner against Sweden in the last group round, but Toni Kroos' late effort was certainly worth the wait. That goal also keeps Germany in the competition.

Germany will be able to progress through to the next round with a win of two goals or more, regardless of what the other teams in the group manage.

Looking Ahead

Only a handful of players are missing from those regularly seen in the squad including Benedickt Höwedes and scorer of the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final Mario Götze.

Sebastian Rudy made a good impression during his time on the pitch in the last match, but he broke his nose in the first half and will have to sit out here. Sami Khedira should replace him.

Centre back Jerome Boateng will also be unavailable for this match after he was sent off late in the game against Sweden.

Boateng is likely to replaced in the back four by Mats Hummels who is close to returning from a neck injury which kept him out of the last match. Hummels should join Niklas Süle in the back four who is likely to be a given a chance to show what he has to offer.

Points of Interest

Germany have met South Korea twice before at World Cups, winning both of those games.
