In Brief

Danilo is ruled out. Casemiro is banned. Marcelo expected to be fit. Costa set to to the squad. Alves is sidelined.

Looking Back

Delivered a strong performance to overcome a dangerous and driven Mexico side in the last-16 clash on Monday. Brazil were under pressure at the back for quite a while but lifted their game in the second half and goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino propelled them to a satisfying and assured performance.

It seems like Brazil are emerging as the leading candidate for the World Cup title now as they are growing ever more in confidence and seem pretty assured at the back, having kept three clean sheets in a row now.

Looking Ahead

Will be looking to lift their game further for the blockbuster game against a star-studded Belgium side for a place in the last four. Brazil will be prepared for a different challenge against a side playing three at the back but they will look to stick to their strengths and maintain the tempo that has been garnered in the past ten days or so.

Casemiro is a major absentee for the Belgium game as he picked his second booking of the competition against Mexico and is thus suspended. Fernandinho is hardly a downgrade in terms of a replacement, however. Marcelo is set to be restored in the starting 11 as he is progressing well on injury and should be able to feature.

Thiago Silva and Paulinho sustained minor niggles at the end of the Mexico game but are training well and there is no real doubt about their participation. Danilo suffered a new ankle injury in training and is out for the rest of the World Cup. Douglas Costa is also back training after missing two games with a thigh injury and is set to included on the bench for the game. Dani Alves is a long-term absentee.

Points of Interest

Brazil faced Belgium once in the World Cup before, winning 2:0 in 2002 in a last-16 tie.

Belgium

In Brief

Achieved dramatic comeback from two-goal down in the round of 16 to eventually win 3:2 and this should give the squad great belief and inspiration. Squad at full strength, but gaffer might consider changes.

Looking Back

Belgium stared at shocking World Cup exit when they faced Japan on Monday after the Asians took 2:0 lead early in the second half. The Red Devils kept creating good chances though and after two inspiring substitutions they ended up winning the match 3:2 with literally the last kick of regular time. Both Fellaini and Chadli came off the bench to score.

This was first such comeback from two-goal deficit at World Cup knockout stage since 1970.

Looking Ahead

Coach Martinez don’t have any selection issues ahead of the game, Januzaj quickly shrugged off a minor problem, but he will seriously consider changes to his line-up. Carrasco was once again disappointing as left wing-back vs. Japan and the hero from that game Chadli could start instead, with Fellaini also hoping to be picked from the off after inspiring the fightback on Monday.

If Fellaini is to start De Bruyne might be given more advanced role to the right of the pitch, which could see him impact the attacks much better and also should allow him to cut inside at every opportunity.

After being heavy favourites in every game played so far Belgium are enjoying their status as underdogs for this one and the pressure seems to be off for the players.

Points of Interest

This is only the third time in Belgium’s history that they reach the quarterfinals and the Red Devils have never been past this stage of the competition before.
